Performance & Debugging

Mac OX S and the Xcode developer tools include a powerful suite of performance analysis tools. Everything you need to fully measure, evaluate, inspect, and then optimize your application or even the system itself is included for free with Mac OS X.

New with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is the Instruments visual analysis tool. Instruments leverages Leopard's built-in support for the open source DTrace analysis engine. By activating the normally dormant DTrace probes built into the core OS frameworks and kernel, Instruments can record many aspects of your system behavior at runtime, from network and disk activity, to CPU sampling, to garbage collections. Instruments displays all this collected information as a set of "tracks," visualized over time, making it easy to correlate system and user events to see cause and effect relationships.

The workhorse profiling tool Shark has been upgraded for Leopard as well, giving great application insight while taking up very little system resources, and now includes support for 64-bit Cocoa applications. DTrace, Shark, and Instruments, combined with many other debugging and analysis tools, make it possible to create applications that maximize the performance of the Mac.
